The three base compound families

Almost every GTI pad falls into one of three families. The names describe what the friction material is made of, which drives how it behaves.

  • Organic (NAO — non-asbestos organic): Soft materials (rubber, resins, fibers) that are quiet, cheap, and gentle on rotors. They bite fine cold but fade early under heat, so they’re an economy street pad, not a performance one. Fine for a granny-spec commuter; not what most GTI owners want.
